About Us
Lone Oaks Farm is a family-owned acreage of rolling hills and forest near Winterset, Iowa. We're committed to keeping our land wild and restoring natural Iowa prairie. In 2016, we salvaged an 1850s hand-hewn oak, post-and-beam barn and relocated it to our land.
The Barn
In 2016, we enlisted the help and expertise of Iowa Barn Savers in our search for the perfect barn for the land. Turns out that perfect barn lived just down the road. Originally built in the 1850s, this hand-hewn, German-style barn caught our eyes right away. Iowa Barn Savers and Iowa Barn Boards led the relocation, quality control, and rebuilding process. In October 2016, we welcomed the barn to our land with a raising party.
Today, we host seasonal farm-to-table dinners in the barn with renowned chefs. Our dinners feature locally sourced ingredients, many of which are grown right on the farm.
LAND RESTORATION
One of our goals with Lone Oaks Farm is to return the land to its wild roots. We worked with our local resources to responsibly burn and reconstruct the land with native prairie. In addition to restoring prairie, we keep bees, which aid in the restoration process and give us delicious, responsibly harvested honey to boot!
SPECKLED HEN FARMS
In spring 2019, we invited Speckled Hen Farms to re-purpose an old dog kennel on our adjacent property. The result was a charming farm store, in perfect keeping with our love of supporting small, local farms. Speckled Hen Farms is a tiny, locally owned farm providing homegrown produce either as a CSA member or at the farm store, located at 1578 North River Trail. We encourage you to come visit Kris at her store, where you can purchase fresh veggies, baked goods, and fun merchandise. Overnight accommodations are also available at Kris’s guest house, The Roost.
